Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Bhutan e-Permit
Apply for a Bhutan e-Permit at bhutan.travel/e-permit before you travel. This is your visa — you cannot board without an approved permit. Processing takes 3-5 business days, and you need a confirmed tour booking (Bhutan requires a pre-paid tour package for most visitors).Apply for e-PermitRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure from Bhutan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bhutan
Immigration at Paro Airport asks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a clear screenshot of your flight booking ready — they check this before issuing your entry stamp.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or tour itinerary
Bhutan requires all tourists to book through a licensed tour operator — your accommodation is part of the package. Have your tour confirmation and hotel vouchers printed out. Immigration may ask for them at the border.Recommended
Proof of funds
Daily minimum spend requirement
Bhutan enforces a minimum daily package rate (around $200-250 USD per person per night depending on the season). Your tour operator handles this, but carry proof of payment or a credit card showing available funds in case immigration asks.Recommended
eVisa is tied to your passport
Your eVisa approval is linked to the passport number you used in the application. If you renew your passport after getting the eVisa, you'll need to reapply with the new passport.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) applies
Most tourists must pay a daily SDF of $100 USD per night. This is separate from the eVisa fee and is usually paid when you book your trip. Check the official Bhutan tourism site for exemptions.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Bhutan eVisa portal (usually through the Department of Immigration). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo, and pay the visa fee. Processing takes 3–5 business days, sometimes longer. Apply at least 3 weeks before your flight.
2
Receive your eVisa approval letter
Once approved, you'll get an email with an approval letter. Print a copy and keep a digital version on your phone. The letter includes a QR code that immigration will scan.
3
Arrive at Paro International Airport
Paro is the only international airport in Bhutan. After landing, follow signs to immigration. Have your passport, eVisa approval letter, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will scan your passport and the QR code, then stamp you in.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the stamp, you're officially in Bhutan. Collect your bags from the carousel and head to the arrivals hall. If you booked a tour or hotel transfer, your driver will be waiting with a sign.
