Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and other designated entry points. Pay $50 USD (single entry) or $100 USD (multiple entry) in cash — US dollars printed after 2009 only, crisp and unmarked. Have a passport photo ready.Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Tanzania. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. If you plan to exit overland, carry a bus or ferry ticket.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a recent bank statement showing sufficient funds. Officers may ask to see it if you look like you are traveling on a tight budget.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in US dollars — no cards, no local currency. Bring crisp, undamaged $50 or $100 bills. ATMs at the airport are unreliable and may not dispense USD.
Visa on arrival is straightforward
No advance application, no appointment, no photos needed. Just show up with your passport, return ticket, and cash. The process at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports usually takes under 30 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa-on-arrival counter
After deplaning at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's usually a separate queue for visa applicants.
2
Present your documents and pay the fee
Hand over your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation. Pay the visa fee in USD cash — single entry $50, multiple entry $100. The officer will process your visa sticker.
3
Receive your visa and proceed to passport control
Once the visa is issued, join the main passport control queue. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 15–30 minutes.
