Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into the UAE. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the UAE
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready — they'll check the date matches your 30-day visa-free stay.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or the address where you're staying. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you're arriving on a one-way ticket or staying near the full 30 days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least 3,000 AED (around $820 USD) for your trip — either cash, a credit card, or a bank statement. Officers rarely check this for US passport holders, but it's smart to have proof.Recommended
UAE has very strict laws
Drug possession (even trace amounts), public intoxication, swearing, and certain medications not prescribed in the UAE can lead to arrest and imprisonment. Check the UAE's list of prohibited substances and carry prescriptions for any medication. Avoid any behavior that could be seen as offensive.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
After landing at any UAE airport (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah), follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Arrivals'. Queue at the counter marked 'All Passports' or 'Foreign Visitors'.
2
Present your passport
Hand your passport to the officer. No forms or photos needed. The officer will scan your passport and stamp it with a 30-day visitor visa.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Check the stamp for the date of entry. You are allowed 30 days from that date. Then collect your baggage and go through customs.
4
Complete any additional screening (rare)
At busy times or if flagged, you may be directed to a secondary interview. Answer honestly about your purpose of visit and accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can apply for a one-time 30-day extension through an immigration office or a registered travel agency, typically for a fee of around 500-600 AED. You must apply before your current visa expires. If you overstay, fines apply: 50 AED for the first day and 100 AED per day thereafter. For stays longer than 60 days, you need a different visa type arranged before travel.
No pre-approval or printed visa is needed. Just your passport and return ticket. However, having a printed or digital copy of your hotel booking and flight itinerary is wise in case immigration asks.
No. The visitor visa on arrival is for tourism and short visits only. You cannot take paid employment, freelance work, or conduct business that generates income in the UAE. For business activities, you need a proper business visa sponsored by a UAE company.
Overstaying results in a fine of 50 AED for the first day, then 100 AED per day thereafter. You may also be banned from re-entering for a period. Pay the fine at the airport immigration office before departure or at an immigration service center. Always check your stamp's expiry date.
No. Children traveling on a US passport get the same free visa on arrival. They must have their own passport with at least 6 months validity. Minors traveling with only one parent or without parents may need additional documents (like a notarized consent letter) — check with your airline.
Yes. US citizens enrolled in the UAE’s Smart Gate system (iris scan) or who have a UAE residence visa can use e-gates. Otherwise, you go to the manual counter. There is no separate e-gate program for US citizens without prior registration.
No, it’s not mandatory for the visa on arrival. But it’s highly recommended because medical care in the UAE is expensive. Some US travel insurance policies cover the UAE. Check your policy before departure.
