Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your US passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Belgium. Belgium does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Brussels Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines often check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend with their address is enough. I've been asked about half the times I've entered Belgium.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can request proof you have enough money for your stay. A credit card and a recent bank statement (digital or paper) showing a few hundred euros usually satisfies them.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Belgium. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
ETIAS coming soon
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in 2025. Once operational, US citizens will need to apply online (€7) before traveling to Belgium or any Schengen country. The authorization will be valid for 3 years.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
You'll land at Brussels Airport (BRU) or Brussels South Charleroi (CRL). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' (EU/EEA and non-EU lanes). US passports go to the non-EU lane.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and your return flight. Answer clearly and honestly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry — keep it safe. You'll need it when leaving the Schengen Area.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel if nothing to declare). Exit into the arrivals hall.
