What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Austrian airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-Schengen arrivals. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. The officer will check your passport, ask your purpose and length of stay, then stamp you in. Expect 2-5 minutes per person.
2
Entering via another Schengen country
If you fly into Germany, France, or any other Schengen state first, you'll clear immigration there. Austria has no internal border checks. Your 90-day clock starts the moment you enter the Schengen zone, not when you reach Austria.
3
During your stay
Keep your passport and a copy of your return ticket handy. Police or hotel staff may ask for ID. No registration with local authorities is needed for stays under 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, conferences, and family visits. You cannot take paid employment or freelance work. For work, you need a separate work visa or residence permit.
No. The visa-free period is not extendable for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit from your home country before traveling. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and a re-entry ban.
Your 90-day allowance resets only after you've been outside the Schengen area for 90 consecutive days. Short trips to non-Schengen countries (e.g., UK, Croatia) do not reset the clock. Keep track of your days — use the Schengen calculator app.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. Hotels will register you automatically. If staying with friends or family, your host does not need to report you.
You must have a valid passport for the entire stay. If it expires, contact the Uruguayan embassy in Vienna immediately for an emergency passport. You cannot leave Austria with an expired passport.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive or take a train from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, or any other Schengen state without showing your passport. Just ensure you entered the Schengen zone legally at your first point of entry.
The main reasons are: passport validity less than 6 months, no return ticket, insufficient funds, or a previous overstay in Schengen. Also, if you cannot clearly state your purpose and accommodation, you may be questioned further. Always have printed or digital copies of your bookings.
