Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport and land borders
You get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at designated land border crossings. Fill in the arrival form on the plane or at the counter, pay the fee in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR), and you're stamped in. Multiple entry options: 15 days ($30), 30 days ($50), or 90 days ($125).Check visa feesRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the date you enter Nepal. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel required
Immigration at Tribhuvan Airport asks for a confirmed onward ticket — a flight out of Nepal within your visa validity. If you're overlanding to India or Tibet, show a bus or train booking. Airlines also check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or trekking permit
Have a hotel booking for at least the first few nights. If you're trekking, you need a TIMS card or trekking permit from the Nepal Tourism Board — that counts as proof of accommodation in the mountains. Immigration rarely asks, but it's good to have.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or card for daily expenses
Carry at least $50 USD per day in cash or have a card that works at Nepali ATMs. Most ATMs in Kathmandu dispense NPR, but outside the valley they're unreliable. Immigration doesn't usually check, but you'll need cash for trekking permits and park fees.Recommended
Cash only for visa fee
The visa on arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD, EUR, or NPR in cash. ATMs are available after immigration, but you need the visa first.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Nepal, not from when you book your flight. Double-check before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card
On the plane or at the airport, grab a white arrival card and a blue visa application form. Fill both out in capital letters. Keep your passport number and flight details handy.
2
Queue at the Visa on Arrival counter
At Tribhuvan International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after baggage claim. There are separate counters for different nationalities. Hand over your passport, completed forms, and cash.
3
Pay the fee and get your visa
The officer will process your visa while you wait. Pay in USD (or NPR/EUR). You'll get a sticker in your passport. Check the validity dates before walking away.
4
Proceed to immigration
After getting the visa sticker, go to the immigration counter. The officer will stamp you in. Keep the arrival card stub — you'll need it when you leave.
