South African passport holders cannot enter China without a visa. No visa on arrival, no e-visa. Start your application at least 3–4 weeks before your trip to allow for processing and any delays.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in China, not from when you leave. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, renew it before applying for the visa.

Submit your visa application
Take your documents to the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in Pretoria or Cape Town. You can apply in person or through a registered agent. Processing takes 4–7 working days for a standard tourist visa.

Pay the visa fee
Pay the visa fee at the centre. For South African passport holders, a single-entry tourist visa costs around R1,200–R1,500 (subject to change). Fees are non-refundable if the visa is refused.

Collect your passport with visa
Return to the centre to collect your passport with the visa sticker, or pay for courier delivery. Check the visa validity dates and number of entries allowed.

Arrive in China and go through immigration
At the airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and hotel booking ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. They'll stamp your passport with your entry date and allowed stay.
