Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
South African passport holders need an eVisa to enter Cuba. Apply at the Cuba Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal. Processing takes a few business days, so apply at least a week before your flight. Print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay
Your South African passport needs at least one blank page for entry stamps. Cuba does not enforce a 6-month validity rule — just ensure the passport is valid for the duration of your trip.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Cuba
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host (casa particular) with their address and contact details. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing sufficient funds for your trip. There is no fixed minimum, but around $50 USD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely check this for short visits.Recommended
eVisa processing can be slow
Don't leave your eVisa application to the last minute. Some travellers report delays of up to 2 weeks. Apply at least 3 weeks before your departure to avoid stress.
Keep your tourist card safe
When you arrive, immigration will give you a tourist card. Don't lose it — you'll need to hand it back when you leave Cuba. Keep it with your passport at all times.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa
Go to the official Cuban eVisa website (no third-party sites). Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel dates. Pay the fee (typically around $50–$80 USD, depending on your nationality). Submit and wait for the approval email — processing can take a few days to a couple of weeks.
2
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, gather: your eVisa approval (printed or saved), passport with 6+ months validity, return ticket confirmation, and first-night accommodation booking. Keep them all in one folder on your phone or in your carry-on.
3
Arrive at Havana Airport (or other entry point)
At immigration, present your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation address. Answer clearly. You'll get a tourist card stamped into your passport — keep it safe for departure.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After the passport check, proceed to baggage claim. There are no additional forms to fill on arrival. Then head through customs — green channel if you have nothing to declare.
