Visa required — apply well in advance
South African passport holders must get a Schengen visa before travelling to Finland. Start the process at least 6 weeks before your departure. Without a visa, you will be denied boarding at the airport.

Gather documents
Collect your passport, photos, travel insurance, flight bookings, hotel confirmations, bank statements, and the completed visa application form. Make copies of everything.

Book an appointment
Go to the VFS Global website for Finland in South Africa. Choose your city (Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban) and book a slot. Appointments can fill up weeks ahead, so book early.

Attend the appointment
Show up at the VFS centre with all your documents. You'll submit your application, pay the fee, and give biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The whole thing takes about 30 minutes.

Wait for processing
Processing usually takes 15 calendar days. You can track your application online. If they need more documents, they'll contact you by email.

Collect your passport
Once approved, you'll get a notification. Pick up your passport from the VFS centre or have it couriered to you. The visa sticker will be inside.

Travel to Finland
At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, join the queue for non-EU passports. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask about your trip, accommodation, and return ticket. Answer clearly and calmly.
