Sri Lanka entry requirements for South Africa passport holders
South African passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka for tourism. It's a straightforward online application, and you'll get the approval before you fly. The ETA is valid for 30 days from your arrival date.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| ETA / eVisaYou need to get this online approval before you fly; it's not available on arrival. Apply online before travel | South African passport holders must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka. Apply at the official ETA website (https://eta.gov.lk/) at least a few days before departure. The ETA is valid for a short stay (typically 30 days) and is not extendable. | Required |
| Passport validityCheck your passport's expiry date — if it's less than 6 months away, renew it before you go. At least 6 months from arrival | Your South African passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in Sri Lanka. | Required |
| Blank passport pagesMake sure there's an empty page in your passport for the immigration officer to stamp. At least 1 blank page | Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. It's wise to have more than one blank page in case of additional stamps. | Required |
| Return or onward ticketImmigration may ask to see your outbound flight booking — have it ready. Proof of departure | You must be able to show a confirmed return or onward flight ticket proving you will leave Sri Lanka before your ETA expires. | Required |
| Proof of fundsCarry a bank statement or credit card to show you can support yourself if asked. Sufficient for your stay | You should be able to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Sri Lanka. This is not always checked but can be requested by immigration. | Recommended |
| Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra arrival form beyond the standard immigration card. Not required | Sri Lanka does not require a separate arrival declaration for South African passport holders at this time. | Not required |
| Vaccination requirementsCheck if you've been in a yellow fever zone before coming — if so, bring your vaccination card. Yellow fever if applicable | If you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, you may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. South Africa is not a yellow fever risk country, but if you have recently traveled to a risk area, carry the certificate. | Recommended |
