Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visitor visa
Zambian passport holders need a visitor visa to enter Canada. Apply online through the IRCC portal at least 4 weeks before travel. Processing times vary — check current wait times on the IRCC website before booking flights.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Canada. Airlines and Canadian border officers enforce this strictly — no grace period for expired passports.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Canada
Canadian immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter of invitation from your host. Border officers may ask where you're staying — having proof avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements, credit card statements, or a letter from your employer showing you have enough money for your stay. Officers may ask how you'll cover expenses — $1,000–$2,000 CAD per month is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Visa required — no exceptions
Zambian passport holders cannot use the eTA system. You must get a visitor visa before flying. Airlines will check this before you board.
Biometrics appointment needed
After you apply online, you'll get a letter asking you to visit a Visa Application Centre in Lusaka for fingerprints and a photo. Book the appointment as soon as you get the letter — slots fill up.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website, create an account, fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, travel history, financial proof), and pay the CAD 100 fee. Processing takes 2–8 weeks depending on your home country.
2
Wait for visa decision
IRCC reviews your application. They may request biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at a Visa Application Centre — you'll get a letter with instructions. Once approved, you'll receive a visa sticker in your passport or a letter of introduction.
3
Arrive at a Canadian airport
At the border, hand over your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask about your trip, funds, and return plans. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor record showing how long you can stay (usually up to 6 months).
