Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Tanzania eVisa
Apply online at the Tanzania eVisa portal before departure. Processing takes 3–5 business days, and you'll receive an approval letter by email. Print that letter and carry it with your passport to present on arrival.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Tanzania does not officially require 6 months of remaining validity, but airlines sometimes enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tanzania
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Tanzania. If you don't have one, they may deny boarding or entry. Book a refundable ticket or use a service like OnwardTicket if your plans are flexible.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having one can delay your clearance.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or a credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. The official threshold is around $200 USD per person per day, but in practice officers rarely check unless you look unprepared.Recommended
Apply early — processing can be slow
eVisa processing sometimes takes the full 10 working days. Don't leave it to the last minute. Apply at least 2 weeks before your flight.
Keep your eVisa letter accessible
Print a copy and also save the PDF on your phone. Immigration at the airport will ask to see it before they stamp your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to visa.immigration.go.tz, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $50 USD) by card. Processing takes 3–10 working days.
2
Receive approval by email
Once approved, you'll get a PDF approval letter. Print a copy and save it on your phone. The letter includes your visa number and validity dates.
3
Arrive at Tanzanian airport
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) or Kilimanjaro Airport, join the 'eVisa' queue. Hand over your passport, approval letter, and return ticket if asked. You'll get an entry stamp.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags, then pass through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.
