Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the Netherlands. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Dutch immigration, but your airline may ask for at least 3 months.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Schiphol and other Dutch ports of entry routinely asks for proof of onward travel. A return flight, train ticket to the UK, or any ticket leaving the Schengen zone works. You have 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries — not just the Netherlands.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed host letter ready. Dutch border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely checks this for Belgian passport holders, but it's a legal requirement under Schengen rules.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc. all count toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine and a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave before day 90. If you need more time, apply for a long-stay visa well in advance.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Have them easily accessible on your phone or in a folder.
2
Arrive at the airport
At Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) or any other Dutch airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' then 'Passport Control'. EU/EEA citizens use the separate e-gates or the 'EU/EEA' queue. Belgian passport holders can use the e-gates if available.
3
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and return date. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation proof.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then through customs (green channel for most tourists). You're free to enter the Netherlands.
