Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Belgian passport needs to be valid for at least 30 days beyond your planned departure date from South Africa. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from South Africa
Immigration officers at OR Tambo, Cape Town, and King Shaka routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask for it, especially if you're staying at a private residence.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or enough cash/credit available to cover your stay. The rule of thumb is about 1,000 ZAR per day, but officers rarely ask unless you look like you're working illegally.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter South Africa. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance on your phone. If you lose your documents, these copies make it much easier to get replacements from your embassy.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at a South African airport
You'll land at one of the major airports: OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the queue for foreign passport holders. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will ask for your passport and may ask about the purpose and length of your stay.
4
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. Answer questions clearly. The officer will stamp your passport with a visitor's entry permit valid for up to 90 days.
5
Collect your luggage and proceed
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then go through customs. You're now free to enter South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable for Belgian passport holders. You must leave before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, a ban, or being declared undesirable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa before you travel.
Only if you are arriving from or have transited through a country with yellow fever risk. Belgium is not a risk country, so you won't need it if you fly directly from Belgium. If you've been in a risk country within 6 days before arrival, you'll need a valid yellow fever certificate.
The visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits only. You cannot work for a South African employer. However, remote work for a foreign employer is generally tolerated for short stays, but it's a grey area. For long-term remote work, consider South Africa's digital nomad visa (if available).
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, and declared 'undesirable' — which can result in a ban from re-entering South Africa for up to 5 years. Always leave before your permit expires.
No, South Africa does not require an online arrival declaration for Belgian passport holders. You'll simply fill in a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport.
No. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration will refuse entry if it's not met.
No, there is no visa on arrival. Belgian citizens get visa-free access for up to 90 days. If you need to stay longer or for purposes other than tourism/business, you must apply for a visa at the South African embassy in Brussels before you travel.
