Processing times can be unpredictable

Overstaying is serious
The Standard Visitor visa is not extendable. Overstaying even by a few days can lead to a ban from the UK for up to 10 years. Always leave before your visa expires.

Complete the online application
Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website, create an account, and fill out the Standard Visitor visa form. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and information about your employment or finances. Double-check everything before submitting — errors can cause delays.

Pay the visa fee
Pay the £115 fee online using a credit or debit card. Keep the payment confirmation — you'll need it for your records.

Book and attend your biometric appointment
After submitting, book an appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or other cities). Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any required documents. At the centre, you'll give fingerprints and a photo. This usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Submit your supporting documents
You can upload documents to the UKVI portal before your appointment or bring them to the VAC for scanning. Ensure translations are included. The VAC staff will confirm everything is in order.

Wait for the decision
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks, but it can be longer during peak seasons. You'll receive an email when a decision is made. You can track your application online using your reference number.

Collect your passport and check the vignette
Once approved, your passport will be returned with a visa vignette (sticker) in it. Check that the dates and personal details are correct. If anything is wrong, contact UKVI immediately.

Transit visa required
Chinese nationals generally require a visa to transit through the UK, even if staying airside. However, the 'Transit Without Visa' (TWOV) scheme may apply if you hold a valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or a Schengen area country, and your onward flight departs on the same day or before 23:59 the next day.
