Chinese passport holders need a visa to enter Iceland in 2026. Since Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, you'll apply for a Schengen visa through the Danish embassy or VFS Global. Plan ahead — appointments can fill up weeks in advance.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply at the Iceland Directorate of Immigration
You need a Schengen visa before traveling to Iceland. Apply at the Iceland Directorate of Immigration portal or through a VFS Global center in China. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — apply well in advance.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport must have at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps. The 3-month validity rule applies to the entire Schengen zone — not just Iceland. Airlines check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Keflavík Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. Budget airlines may refuse boarding without one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel bookings or invitation letter
Have confirmed hotel reservations or a host's invitation letter ready. Immigration may ask for the address and contact details of where you're staying each night.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry bank statements showing sufficient funds for your stay — roughly 10,000 ISK (€70) per day. Credit cards are widely accepted, but having cash or a recent statement helps.Recommended
Visa processing can be slow in summer
From June to August, processing times often stretch to 30–45 days due to high demand. Apply at least 8 weeks before your planned departure. Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
You're applying for a Schengen visa, not an Iceland visa
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Your visa allows you to travel to any Schengen country (26 European countries) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Make sure your first point of entry or longest stay is Iceland.
Travel insurance is mandatory
You must have travel insurance covering at least €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation. Without it, your visa application will be rejected. Buy it before your appointment and bring the certificate.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport with 6+ months validity, completed visa application form, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, bank statements, and passport photos. Make copies of everything.
2
Book an appointment
Schedule an appointment at the Danish Embassy in Beijing or the VFS Global center in your region. Appointments can fill up 2–4 weeks in advance, so book early.
3
Attend the visa interview
Show up at the embassy or VFS center with all original documents and copies. You'll submit biometrics (fingerprints and photo). The interview is usually short — answer honestly about your travel plans.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days. It can stretch to 30–45 days during peak season (summer). Track your application online if available.
5
Collect your passport
Once approved, collect your passport with the visa sticker. Check the dates and spelling of your name immediately — errors need to be fixed before you travel.
6
Arrive in Iceland
At Keflavik Airport, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation booking ready. The officer may ask about your itinerary — be clear and concise.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing is 15 calendar days, but it can take 30–45 days during summer peak. Apply at least 6–8 weeks before your trip. You can apply up to 6 months before your travel date.
You apply through the Danish Embassy in Beijing or VFS Global centers in major cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Iceland doesn't have its own embassy in China — Denmark handles visa processing for Iceland.
The Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults (about ¥620), €40 for children 6–12, and free for children under 6. VFS Global charges an additional service fee of around ¥200–300. Fees are non-refundable if your visa is rejected.
Yes, a single-entry visa is fine for a direct trip. If you plan to visit other Schengen countries (e.g., Denmark, Germany) during the same trip, you need a multiple-entry visa. Apply for the one that matches your itinerary.
You'll receive a formal rejection letter explaining the reason. Common reasons: insufficient funds, weak travel history, or incomplete documents. You can appeal within 30 days or reapply with stronger evidence. There's no limit on reapplications.
Immigration officers at Keflavik Airport can ask for proof of funds. Have bank statements or a credit card ready. The general guideline is around €100 per day of your stay. If you can't show it, you may be denied entry.
Extensions are very rare and only granted for emergencies (e.g., medical issues, natural disasters). You must apply to the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban from the Schengen area.
