Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Mexico. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún will turn you away if it expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration at Cancún and Mexico City routinely asks for a return or onward flight booking within your 180-day visa-free period. Budget airlines like Volaris and VivaAerobús check this before letting you board.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Officers at busy airports like Cancún ask for this about half the time.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least $500 USD or equivalent. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if they do, a blank statement can get you denied entry.Recommended
Tourist permit is not extendable
The 180-day tourist permit you receive on arrival cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Mexico and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines and future entry issues.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Mexican immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months of validity from your arrival date. Check your passport now — if it's close, renew before booking flights.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Mexican immigration
At any Mexican airport (Cancún, Mexico City, etc.), follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for foreign visitors.
2
Present your passport and documents
Hand over your passport and, if asked, your return ticket and accommodation details. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Receive your tourist permit
You'll get a paper tourist permit (Forma Migratoria Múltiple, FMM) or an electronic record. Keep the paper copy with your passport — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your bags and go through customs. You may be asked to press a button for a random luggage check.

No advance form is required. You'll receive a tourist permit (FMM) at immigration upon arrival. Some airlines may ask for an online health declaration, but that's rare.
Your valid passport, a printed or digital copy of your return/onward ticket, and your first night's accommodation booking. Travel insurance is not required but highly recommended.
