Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay in Japan
Your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay — Japan does not enforce the 6-month validity rule. Airlines sometimes still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer, so have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Immigration rarely asks for this, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host can speed things up if questioned. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Officers almost never check this for Finnish passport holders, but carrying a bank statement or credit card showing available funds covers you in rare cases. No specific minimum amount is published.Recommended
Visit Japan Web registrationJapan's digital pre-arrival registration at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.

6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Japan. If it expires sooner, you will be denied boarding or entry. Check your passport now, not the week before you fly.
Visit Japan Web saves time at major airports
Register at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp before you fly. It's free and lets you skip the paper arrival card queue at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Chubu airports. You'll get a QR code to show at immigration.
Overstaying your 90 days is serious
Overstaying even by a day can result in fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Before you fly
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from your arrival date. Book your return flight and first night hotel. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) — it takes 5 minutes and saves queue time at major airports like Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Chubu.
2
Arrival at Japanese airport
Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' / 'Non-Japanese'. Have your passport and (if you registered) the Visit Japan Web QR code ready. The officer will take your fingerprints and a photo. They may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying. Answer honestly — tourism is fine. You'll get a 90-day landing permission sticker in your passport.
3
After immigration
Collect your luggage, then proceed to customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, you can use the QR code lane for faster processing. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (e.g., a tourist visa or working holiday visa) before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan.
Not usually for Finnish passport holders. Immigration officers rarely ask for bank statements or cash. However, if you look like you might work illegally or have no means of support, they can ask. Having a credit card and a return ticket is usually enough.
You will likely be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before you travel.
No. You need a confirmed return or onward ticket. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration may ask to see it. A one-way ticket will get you denied boarding.
No, it's optional. But it's free and saves time at immigration — you skip the paper form queue. You can still fill out the paper arrival card on the plane if you prefer. Both work.
Technically, the visa-free status is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is in a grey area. Japanese immigration generally tolerates it for short stays, but officially you're not allowed to 'work' in Japan. If you're unsure, consult the Japanese embassy.
You cannot extend the visa-free stay. You must leave Japan before day 90. If you want to stay longer, apply for a visa (e.g., tourist visa, working holiday, or student visa) at the Japanese embassy in Finland before you travel. Overstaying has serious consequences.
