Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and other designated entry points. Have $50 USD in cash for a single-entry tourist visa (up to 90 days) — the immigration officer will process it at the counter. Bring a passport photo or be prepared to pay a small extra fee for on-site photo service.Visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Original passport with at least 6 months validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Tanzania. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A printed or digital copy of your flight booking works — they want to see you are leaving Tanzania within your visa validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed or digital hotel reservation for at least the first few nights. If staying with friends or family, a letter of invitation with their contact details and address helps.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds for your stay. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash — US dollars are strongly preferred. ATMs at the airport are unreliable and credit cards are not accepted. Bring crisp, undamaged $50 bills. Older series (pre-2009) may be rejected.
E-visa alternative
You can apply for an e-visa online before travel at eservices.immigration.go.tz. It costs the same ($50 USD) and takes 3–5 business days. This lets you skip the visa-on-arrival queue at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after passport control. There's a dedicated counter.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be given a small form to complete. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Have your hotel address ready.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over the completed form and your passport to the immigration officer. Pay $50 USD in cash. They'll give you a receipt.
4
Receive your visa sticker
The officer will affix a visa sticker into your passport. Check that the dates are correct before walking away. The whole process takes 5–15 minutes.
5
Proceed to passport control
After getting the visa, join the main passport control queue. Present your passport with the new visa, your boarding pass, and your return ticket if asked.
