Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Malaysia
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Immigration officers in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi enforce this strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia within 90 days
Immigration at KLIA and other entry points routinely asks for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination. If you're flying out on a budget airline like AirAsia, they'll check this before letting you board.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation for your stay
Immigration officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from a host ready. Booking.com or Airbnb confirmations on your phone work fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement for your stay
You should be able to show you have enough money for your trip — around 500 MYR per day is a safe benchmark. A recent bank statement or credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies the officer. I've never been asked for this personally, but it's in the rulebook.Recommended
Overstaying is expensive
The fine is 500 MYR per day (about 100 EUR) for the first 30 days. After that, it increases. Always check your entry stamp and set a reminder to leave before day 90.
Keep your return ticket handy
Immigration officers at KLIA and other entry points routinely ask for proof of onward travel. A screenshot on your phone is fine — just have it ready before you reach the counter.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 90 days.
2
Present documents if asked
Immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel or accommodation. Hand over your printed or digital booking confirmation. Answer questions clearly — they're routine.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay period. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — confirm the number of days is correct.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Malaysia.
