Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport
Hungarian passport holders get a visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman. The visa costs 40 JOD (about $56 USD) and is valid for 30 days. Pay in cash at the bank counter before the immigration desks — they accept Jordanian dinars, US dollars, and euros.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Jordan. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Two blank pages are required for the entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Queen Alia Airport ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket before issuing the visa on arrival. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready. If you are overlanding to Israel or the West Bank, a bus or taxi booking out of Jordan also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask for your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Jordan. Have a printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone. If you are camping or have no fixed address, book a refundable hotel for the first night.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The 40 JOD fee must be paid in cash. No cards, no mobile payments. Bring exact change in JOD or USD. ATMs before immigration are unreliable.
Visa on arrival is single-entry only
If you plan to leave Jordan and come back (e.g., day trips to Israel or the West Bank), you'll need to pay the 40 JOD fee each time you re-enter. For multiple entries, get a visa from a Jordanian embassy beforehand.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) or other entry point
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' counters before passport control. At AMM, these are clearly marked. Join the queue, hand over your passport, and pay the fee (40 JOD for single entry, cash only). You'll get a sticker in your passport. Then proceed to immigration.
2
Pay the visa fee
The fee is 40 Jordanian Dinars (about 56 USD) for a single-entry visa. Cash only — bring exact change in JOD or USD. Credit cards are not accepted. Keep the receipt.
3
Present documents at immigration
Hand over your passport with the visa sticker, your boarding pass, and optionally your return ticket and hotel booking. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying). Answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp valid for up to 30 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. No further formalities. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa on arrival is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa type before travel (e.g., a tourist visa from a Jordanian embassy) or leave and re-enter. Overstaying can result in fines.
Yes, you can get a visa on arrival at all land borders, including the King Hussein Bridge (Allenby) from the West Bank, the Sheikh Hussein Bridge from Israel, and the Wadi Araba crossing from Eilat. The same 40 JOD fee applies. Note that the King Hussein Bridge has limited hours and may require a departure tax.
No, the visa on arrival fee is cash only. There are ATMs at Queen Alia Airport before immigration, but they sometimes run out of cash. Best to bring 40 JOD in cash from home or exchange at the airport. USD is accepted but you'll get change in JOD at a poor exchange rate.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you do not need a visa. But if you plan to leave the transit area (e.g., to explore Amman during a long layover), you'll need a visa on arrival. Some airlines may require you to have a visa even for transit — check with your carrier.
No, the standard visa on arrival is single-entry only. If you need multiple entries (e.g., for trips to Israel and back), you must apply for a multiple-entry visa at a Jordanian embassy before travel. The fee is higher (around 120 JOD).
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. There are no exceptions. Renew your passport before travel.
No, there is no visa waiver agreement. All Hungarian citizens must obtain a visa — either on arrival or in advance from a Jordanian embassy. The visa on arrival is the simplest option for tourism.
