Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land border crossings. Pay the fee in cash (USD) — $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. Have two passport-size photos ready.Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry into Nepal. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight. If you cannot show one, they may deny the visa on arrival. Book a refundable ticket if your plans are flexible.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended but not always checked
Have a hotel booking or trekking lodge reservation ready. Immigration rarely asks for it, but airlines sometimes request proof of where you will stay. A simple booking confirmation email works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended for visa on arrival
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration officers rarely check this, but having cash on hand helps if they ask. ATMs are available in Kathmandu.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter at Tribhuvan International Airport does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD, EUR, or NPR in cash. ATMs are available after immigration, but you need the fee to get through.
E-visa option available
You can skip the airport queue by applying for an e-visa online before you go. Same cost, same validity. Apply at https://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np. Processing takes 2-3 business days.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the airport, grab a 'Tourist Visa On Arrival' form. Fill in your details: passport info, flight number, hotel address, and duration of stay (15, 30, or 90 days).
2
Queue at the visa counter
At Tribhuvan International Airport, go to the 'Visa On Arrival' counter (not the regular immigration line). Hand over your form, passport, and photos. Pay the fee in cash.
3
Get your visa sticker
The officer will issue a visa sticker and paste it into your passport. Check the dates and duration are correct before walking away.
4
Proceed to immigration
Take your passport with the new visa sticker to the immigration officer. They'll stamp you in. That's it — you're in Nepal.

Frequently asked questions

As of 2026, the fees are: 15 days — $30 USD, 30 days — $50 USD, 90 days — $125 USD. Pay in USD, EUR, or NPR. No credit cards.
Yes, but it's not automatic. You need to go to the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or a regional office in Pokhara). Extensions cost around $3 USD per day for up to 15 days, then $5 per day for longer. You can extend up to a total of 150 days per calendar year.
Same visa-on-arrival process applies at land border crossings like Sunauli, Raxaul, or Kakarbhitta. You'll fill out the same form, pay the same fee, and get the same visa. Cash is even more important at land borders — ATMs are scarce.
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the transit area for any reason (e.g., to catch a domestic flight), you'll need a visa on arrival.
Yes, Nepal offers an e-visa system. You can apply at https://nepaliport.immigration.gov.np. It costs the same as the visa on arrival and saves you queuing at the airport. Processing takes 2-3 business days.
Overstays are fined at $5 USD per day for the first 30 days, then $10 per day after that. You'll need to pay at the immigration office before leaving. Serious overstays (months) can lead to a ban.
No mandatory vaccines for entry, but hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are recommended. If you're trekking above 2,500m, consider altitude sickness medication. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
