Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Indian eVisa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before departure. Fees range from $25 to $80 USD depending on the visa type (e-Tourist, e-Business, e-Medical). Approval usually comes within 72 hours — print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity
Your Irish passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of arrival in India. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Without it, you may be refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in India. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support your stay
Have a recent bank statement or credit card showing sufficient funds for your trip. There is no fixed minimum amount, but around $300–$500 USD for a short visit is a safe benchmark.Recommended
eVisa is not a guarantee of entry
Having an approved eVisa does not guarantee you'll be let in. The immigration officer at the airport makes the final decision. Always have your return ticket and accommodation details ready.
Use the official eVisa website only
Only apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Many third-party sites charge extra fees and may not process your application correctly. The official site is straightforward.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). Fill in your personal and travel details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around €80–€100 depending on duration). You'll get a confirmation email within 3–5 business days.
2
Pack your documents
Print your eVisa approval email, your flight itinerary, and your hotel booking confirmation. Also save digital copies on your phone. Make sure your passport has at least one blank page.
3
Arrive at an Indian airport
You can enter India through any of the 28 designated airports (including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Goa). Go to the 'eVisa' or 'Foreigners' queue. Have your passport and eVisa approval ready. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints, then stamp your passport.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, go through the green channel. If you have goods over the duty-free limit, use the red channel.
