Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just needs to be valid for the whole stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a printed or digital return ticket avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Immigration rarely asks for hotel confirmations, but budget airlines and some check-in staff request them. Carry a printed booking confirmation or have it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Officers almost never ask for proof of funds for Irish passport holders, but having a bank statement or credit card showing available credit covers you if questioned.Recommended

Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to board. Renew early.
Visit Japan Web saves time
Pre-registering at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp is free and lets you skip the paper arrival card. You'll get a QR code that speeds you through immigration at major airports. Do it before you fly.
90 days is generous — plan your exit
You get a full 90 days visa-free. Mark your departure date on your calendar. Overstaying even by a day can cause serious problems. Set a reminder to leave a few days early.

What happens at the border

1
Before you fly — pre-register on Visit Japan Web
Go to https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp and create an account. Enter your passport details, flight info, and first night accommodation. You'll get a QR code. Save it on your phone — it speeds up the immigration queue at major airports like Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and Chubu.
2
At the airport — check-in and boarding
At Dublin or any Irish airport, the airline will check your passport validity (6 months) and onward ticket. They may also ask for your accommodation. Have these ready. Boarding pass issued.
3
Arrival in Japan — immigration queue
At the immigration hall, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and the arrival card (filled out on the plane) or your Visit Japan Web QR code ready. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints. They may ask: 'How long are you staying?' and 'Where are you staying?' Answer clearly. You'll get a 90-day landing permission sticker in your passport.
4
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your bags. At customs, you'll hand over the customs declaration form (also on the plane or via Visit Japan Web). Green channel if you have nothing to declare. Red channel if you have items over the duty-free limit.
5
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to go. Activate your eSIM or pick up a pocket WiFi. Follow signs to trains, buses, or taxis.

No. If you're transiting and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, provided you meet the same requirements (passport validity, onward ticket).
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends/family only. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) or study at a school. You need the appropriate visa for those activities.
Overstaying is a serious offence. You'll be detained, questioned, and fined. You may be deported and banned from re-entering Japan for several years. Don't risk it.
It's not routinely asked, but immigration officers can request it. Have a bank statement or credit card available just in case. A few hundred euros per day of stay is a safe buffer.
No, it's optional. But it saves time at immigration because you skip the paper arrival card. If you don't use it, you'll fill out a paper card on the plane. Both work fine.
