Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Since January 8, 2025, all visa-exempt visitors need an ETA before flying to the UK. Apply at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips for up to 2 years. Approval usually comes through within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in the UK. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required — just make sure it doesn't expire before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at UK border control routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return ticket or a flight out of the UK ready — they check this at passport control, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Officers may ask where you're staying — having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Have access to enough money for your stay — a recent bank statement or credit card works. UK immigration rarely asks for a specific amount, but showing you can cover accommodation and expenses keeps things smooth.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the UK. If it expires sooner, you will be refused entry no exceptions. Check your passport now, not at the airport.
No visa, but still need documents
Even though you don't need a visa, border officers can ask for proof of return ticket, accommodation, and funds. Have them ready on your phone or printed. A screenshot of your return flight is enough.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return or onward ticket and first night accommodation. Download or print booking confirmations. Get travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM.
2
Arrive at UK border control
At any UK airport (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, etc.), join the 'All Other Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will ask the purpose and length of your stay.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the permitted stay (usually 6 months). Keep the stamp visible you'll need it when leaving. You're now free to enter the UK.
