Luxembourg passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom. This is a quick online application, not a traditional visa, and you'll need to complete it before you travel. The ETA is valid for multiple entries over two years, so you won't need to reapply for each trip.

Apply for United Kingdom eVisaRequired for most visa-exempt visitors since 2024-2025. Not a visa — approval is linked electronically to your passport. Apply before you travel.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)You need to get this online approval before you board your flight or train to the UK.
Visa-free entry permission
Luxembourg citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom. Apply online via the official UK government ETA service at https://www.gov.uk/eta. The ETA is valid for multiple entries and is not extendable.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date — it must not expire within 6 months of your UK arrival.
At least 6 months from arrival
Your Luxembourg passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of arrival in the United Kingdom.Required
Blank passport pagesMake sure there's an empty page in your passport for the border officer to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps or visa endorsements.Required
Return or onward ticketBorder officials may ask to see that you plan to leave the UK.
Proof of departure
Carry proof of a return or onward ticket to leave the UK before your ETA or permitted stay expires.Required
Proof of fundsIt's wise to carry proof that you can pay for your trip, though not always asked.
Sufficient means of support
Be prepared to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay in the UK, such as bank statements or cash.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before landing.
UK landing card
No separate arrival declaration is required for Luxembourg citizens entering the UK.Not required
Don't rely on the 2-minute approval
While most ETAs are approved instantly, some applications take up to 3 working days. If you apply the day before your flight and it gets held up, you'll miss your trip. Apply well in advance.
ETA is not extendable
The ETA allows a maximum stay of 6 months and cannot be extended. If you think you might need to stay longer, you must apply for a standard visitor visa before travelling.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the official UK government ETA website (gov.uk/eta) and complete the application. You'll need your passport details, a valid email address, and a debit/credit card for the £10 fee. The application takes about 10 minutes.
2
Wait for approval
Most ETA applications are approved within minutes, but some can take up to 3 working days. Check your email for the approval notification. Don't book flights until you have the ETA confirmed.
3
Travel to the UK
When you arrive at a UK airport (e.g., Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester), go to the ePassport gates if you have a biometric passport — most Luxembourg passports are. Otherwise, join the standard passport control queue. Have your passport ready; the ETA is checked electronically.
4
Entry and stay
You'll be granted entry for up to 6 months. The border officer may ask about your plans, so have your accommodation and return details handy. You cannot extend this stay — the ETA is not extendable.
