Luxembourg passport holders don't need a visa for short visits to Iceland. Starting in 2026, you can enter Iceland and the entire Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Just ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Luxembourg passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Iceland. Since Iceland is part of the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not per country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Keflavík Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free limit. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. A simple booking printout or phone screen works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly 100 EUR per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or credit card showing available credit usually satisfies this.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day allowance is for the entire Schengen Area, not just Iceland. Keep track of your days — there are free apps like 'Schengen Calculator' that help.
Passport validity is strict
Airlines often check passport validity at check-in. If your passport expires within 6 months of your return date, you may be denied boarding. Renew early.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Keflavik Airport
You'll land at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then to the passport control queue for non-Schengen passengers. Even though you're visa-free, you'll still go through this line.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. Have your return ticket and accommodation confirmation ready on your phone just in case.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp records your entry into the Schengen Area. Keep it visible — you'll need it if you leave and re-enter.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to the baggage claim area. Once you have your bags, walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel unless you have goods to declare. Then you're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward your 90-day limit.
No, but you cannot work for an Icelandic employer without a work permit. Remote work for a non-Icelandic company is generally allowed under the visa-free stay, as long as you don't overstay the 90-day limit.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Icelandic border police. Renew your passport before traveling. Some airlines are stricter than others, so don't risk it.
Generally no for tourism. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency). You would need to leave the Schengen Area and re-enter after 90 days outside.
No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. Just keep your entry stamp as proof of legal entry.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area, and complications for future travel. Border police take it seriously.
No. Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, so the same visa-free rules apply for all 27 Schengen countries. You can travel freely between them without additional checks.
