Apply early — but not too early
The ETA is valid for 30 days from your arrival date, not from the date of issue. You can apply up to 6 months in advance, but it's best to apply within a few weeks of your trip to avoid confusion.
Use the official ETA website only
There are many third-party websites that charge inflated fees for ETA processing. Always use https://eta.gov.lk/ — it's the official government portal and the only one you need.
Passport validity is non-negotiable
Sri Lankan immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date. Even if you have an approved ETA, you'll be turned away. Check your passport now, not the night before your flight.

Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email address. Pay the fee (around USD 35 for a standard tourist ETA) with a credit or debit card. You'll receive a confirmation email with your ETA reference number.

Receive ETA approval
Approval is usually instant or within 24 hours. Check your email (including spam folder) for the approval. Print a copy or save it on your phone to show at check-in and immigration.

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
After landing, follow the signs to 'Immigration'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, ETA approval (printed or digital), and return ticket ready. The officer will check your documents, take your fingerprints, and stamp your passport. You'll get a 30-day tourist visa stamp.

Collect your baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a green channel for 'nothing to declare' if you're not carrying restricted items. Then you're free to enter Sri Lanka!
