Mozambican passport holders need a visa to enter the Netherlands for any purpose. You must apply at the Dutch embassy or consulate before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa option. Plan ahead: processing can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — submit your application up to 6 months before departure. Use the official portal to find the correct application form and appointment booking system.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and have at least 2 blank pages. The 3-month validity rule applies to the entire Schengen zone — not just the Netherlands. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Schiphol Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a signed host declaration (garantstelling) ready. Immigration may ask for it at the border — especially if you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing access to at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration officers rarely ask for this, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Apply early — no shortcuts
There is no e-visa or visa-on-arrival for Mozambican passport holders. You must go through the full embassy process. Start at least 2 months before your trip to avoid last-minute stress.
Schengen rules apply
A Netherlands visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries. But you must enter through the Netherlands first, and your main destination must be the Netherlands. You cannot use it to 'shop around' for a different entry point.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, insurance, bank statements, and a completed visa application form. Check the Dutch embassy website for the exact checklist.
2
Submit your application
Book an appointment at the Dutch embassy in Maputo or the consulate in Beira. You must apply in person — no postal submissions. Bring originals and photocopies of every document.
3
Pay the visa fee
The standard Schengen visa fee is €80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free for children under 6. Pay at the embassy in cash or by bank transfer — check their accepted methods.
4
Wait for processing
Processing takes 15 calendar days on average, but can stretch to 45 days during peak season. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
5
Collect your passport
You will be notified when your passport is ready. Collect it in person or arrange courier delivery if the embassy offers it. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and spelling.
6
Enter the Netherlands
At Schiphol Airport or any Schengen border, present your passport with the visa sticker. The officer may ask about your trip, accommodation, and funds. Answer clearly and honestly.
