Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai ask for a return or onward ticket on arrival. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a printed or digital copy ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, not having it can mean extra questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or enough cash/credit available to cover your stay. No set amount is published, but ¥50,000–¥100,000 equivalent is a safe benchmark.Recommended

Visit Japan Web saves time
Pre-registering on Visit Japan Web (free at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) lets you skip the paper forms and use a QR code at immigration and customs. It's optional but can save you 15-30 minutes at busy airports like Narita and Haneda.
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day visa-free stay is not extendable. Overstaying even by a day can result in fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave before your 90 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from your entry date. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) to speed up arrival.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and any pre-filled Visit Japan Web QR code ready.
3
Go through immigration
Join the queue for foreign nationals. An officer will check your passport, ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. They may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking. Answer clearly and briefly. You'll get an entry stamp valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Then proceed to customs. If you used Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the automated kiosk. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration form. You'll likely be waved through unless you have something to declare.
5
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to enter Japan. Activate your eSIM or pick up a physical SIM if you arranged one. Follow signs to trains, buses, or taxis to get to your accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study. You cannot take paid employment or work for a Japanese company. If you plan to work, you need a proper work visa arranged before you travel.
No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan. If you need a longer stay, you must apply for a visa at a Japanese embassy before traveling.
The airline may refuse to let you board, and immigration may deny entry. Always have a confirmed return or onward ticket before you fly. A screenshot on your phone is usually enough, but a printed copy is safer.
Not usually. Immigration officers rarely ask for proof of funds for Norwegian passport holders. But if you look like you might be working illegally or staying beyond 90 days, they could ask. Having a credit card and some cash (JPY) is sensible.
Visit Japan Web is a free online system where you pre-register your immigration and customs details. It's optional but highly recommended — it lets you skip the paper forms and use a QR code at the airport, saving 15-30 minutes in queues. Register at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp.
No. Japanese immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. Airlines also check this before boarding.
Stay calm. Ask the immigration officer for the reason in writing. You have the right to contact your embassy — the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo can assist. In most cases, you'll be put on the next flight back to Norway at your own expense. To avoid this, ensure all documents are in order before you travel.
