Norwegian passport holders can enter Mexico for tourism or business stays up to 180 days without a visa. This policy has been stable for years and continues in 2026. You only need a valid passport and to complete the immigration form on arrival.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Norwegian passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to be in Mexico. Airlines sometimes ask for 6 months validity, but Mexican immigration does not enforce that rule.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mexico
Immigration officers at Mexico City and Cancún routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within 180 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry your hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly 500 USD per month of your stay. Immigration almost never checks this for Norwegian passport holders, but it's smart to have it.Recommended
Keep your immigration form stub
The bottom half of the Forma Migratoria Múltiple is your proof of legal entry. You must hand it back when you leave Mexico. Lose it, and you'll face delays and a fine at the airport.
Overstaying is expensive
Staying past your 180-day limit can result in fines of around 500–2000 MXN per month overstayed, and a potential ban from re-entering Mexico for up to 5 years. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first-night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Fill out the immigration form
On the flight to Mexico, you'll receive a paper immigration form (Forma Migratoria Múltiple). Fill it out in capital letters. Keep the bottom half — you'll need to hand it back when you leave.
3
Go through immigration at the airport
At Mexico City (MEX), Cancún (CUN), or any other airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport and immigration form. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and return the form stub.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. You may be randomly selected for a customs inspection — just follow instructions. Then walk through the green/red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 180-day visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Mexico and re-enter, or apply for a temporary residence visa at a Mexican consulate before your trip. Overstaying can result in fines and a ban.
If you're staying in the airport transit area and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the airport or have a layover longer than a few hours, you'll need to go through immigration under the same visa-free rules.
You'll be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Mexican immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6 months are counted from your date of entry, not your departure.
Yes, any onward ticket out of Mexico works — it doesn't have to be a return to Norway. Immigration just wants proof you'll leave within the allowed stay.
No, it's not a legal requirement for entry. But it's strongly recommended because medical costs in Mexico can be high. A basic policy covering medical emergencies and evacuation is cheap and worth it.
Technically, the tourist permit doesn't allow you to work for a Mexican employer. But remote work for a foreign company is generally tolerated. If you plan to stay long-term, check the new 'Remote Worker Visa' option at a Mexican consulate.
You'll need it to leave the country. If you lose it, go to the nearest INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración) office to get a replacement before your departure. Expect a small fine and some paperwork.
