Norwegian passport holders need a visa or an approved ESTA to enter the United States in 2026. For tourism or business visits under 90 days, the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) is the standard route — no visa appointment needed. If you're planning to study, work, or stay longer, you'll need a specific visa from the US embassy.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
US visa application
B-1/B-2 visitor visa
Apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa at the US embassy or consulate in Oslo. Complete the DS-160 form online, pay the $185 fee, and schedule an interview. Approval is at the consular officer's discretion.Apply for US visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Norwegian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the US. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by US law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
US immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital return ticket or onward itinerary ready at the border.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a letter from your US host with their address and contact details. Officers may ask where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or credit card
Have recent bank statements or a credit card showing you can cover your expenses. No minimum amount is set, but show enough for your planned stay.Recommended
ESTA is not a visa
ESTA only covers tourism and business visits under 90 days. If you plan to study, work, or stay longer, you must apply for the appropriate visa at the US embassy in Oslo. Don't show up with an ESTA for a work trip — you'll be denied entry.
US healthcare is expensive
A simple ER visit can cost $500–$3,000. Travel insurance is cheap compared to that. Get it before you leave.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for ESTA online
Go to https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, a credit card, and an email address. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before departure.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save to your phone: ESTA approval email, return ticket, first night accommodation confirmation, and travel insurance details. Keep them in a folder or a notes app for quick access.
3
Arrive at the airport
At check-in, the airline will verify your ESTA and passport. They may also ask for your return ticket. Boarding pass issued — you're good.
4
US immigration on arrival
At the airport (e.g., JFK, LAX, Newark), join the 'Visa Waiver Program' or 'ESTA' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer will ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long. Answer honestly and briefly. They may take your fingerprints and photo.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After clearance, collect your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Done.
