Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Norway passport holders need an ETA to enter the UK since January 8, 2025. Apply at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips for up to 2 years. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for UK ETARequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Norwegian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the UK. No minimum validity period beyond departure is required, but airlines may check for 6 months — carry your passport with at least one blank page.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at UK borders routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return ticket or a ticket to your next destination ready — a printout or digital copy on your phone works. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to enough funds for your trip — a bank statement or credit card with available credit works. UK immigration doesn't enforce a specific minimum, but showing you can cover accommodation and expenses helps.Recommended
6-month passport rule is strict
UK Border Force will refuse entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date. Check your passport expiry now — if it's close, renew before booking flights.
No visa needed, but be prepared
You don't need a visa, but immigration officers can still ask for proof of funds, accommodation, and onward travel. Have digital copies on your phone or printed backups.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK Border
Queue at the 'All Other Passports' or 'Non-UK/Ireland' lane at airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester. At Eurostar or ferry ports, follow signs for non-UK passports.
2
Hand Over Passport and Answer Questions
The Border Force officer will ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer clearly and honestly. They may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation.
3
Get Your Entry Stamp
If everything checks out, you'll get a stamp in your passport with the date and a note of your permitted stay (usually 6 months). Check the stamp before walking away.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags) and then through customs. Green channel for most tourists (nothing to declare).

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, conferences, and short family visits only. You cannot take up employment, work as a freelancer, or do paid work without a work visa. If you want to work, apply for a Skilled Worker visa or Youth Mobility Scheme visa (if you're 18–30).
You cannot extend a visitor stay beyond 6 months. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the UK and apply for a different visa (e.g., a Standard Visitor visa for medical treatment or a long-term study visa). Overstaying can lead to a ban.
Yes, any onward ticket out of the UK works — it doesn't have to be back to Norway. A flight to France, a train to Belgium, or a ferry to the Netherlands all count. Just make sure it's before your 180 days are up.
Yes, but you'll still go through UK Border Force at the port or airport where you first set foot in the UK. If you fly into Dublin and then take a ferry to Holyhead, you'll clear UK immigration at Holyhead. The same 180-day rule applies.
You will likely be refused entry. UK Border Force strictly enforces the 6-month rule. If your passport expires in 5 months, you'll be sent back. Renew your passport before travelling.
No. Norwegian citizens do not need to register with the police when visiting the UK as a tourist. That requirement only applies to certain nationalities on longer visas.
No. ePassport gates are for UK, EU, EEA, Swiss, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, New Zealand, Singaporean, South Korean, and US citizens. Norwegian passport holders must use the manned booths.
