Norwegian passport holders can enter the Netherlands for short stays without a visa. As of 2026, you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned exit from the Schengen zone. The Netherlands enforces this strictly at check-in and border control. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Schiphol regularly asks for proof of onward travel. A return flight, train ticket, or ferry booking showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days works. Airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb reservation, or a signed invitation letter from your host ready. Border officers at Schiphol sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A printed copy or a PDF on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash showing you can support yourself
Carry a recent bank statement or credit card showing you have at least €55 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely asks Norwegians for this, but having it ready avoids delays. ATMs are widely available in the Netherlands.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area. Days spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc. all count. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.
Travel insurance is cheap insurance
A basic travel insurance policy costs around €20-30 for a week. Without it, a single hospital visit could cost hundreds. Get it before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Schengen border control
At Schiphol Airport or any other entry point, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket, accommodation booking, and proof of funds. Answer questions clearly — tourism, visiting family, or business meetings are all fine.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep it safe — you'll need it when leaving the Schengen area.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passing border control, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen area, not just the Netherlands. So if you've already spent time in France or Germany, count those days too.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you'd need a national visa or residence permit, which you must apply for before your 90 days expire.
Yes, you need proof that you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. An onward ticket to a non-Schengen country works just as well as a return ticket home.
You'll likely be denied entry. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is in a grey area. For safety, don't work for a Dutch company or client without proper permits.
Overstaying can result in a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Don't risk it — track your days carefully.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is needed. If you stay longer (with a visa or permit), you must register at the local municipality within 5 days.
