Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
You need a Schengen visa to enter Sweden. Apply at the Swedish embassy or consulate in Uganda — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. Start your application online at the Sweden Migration Agency portal.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area. It also needs at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa application and entry
You must show a confirmed return or onward flight ticket when applying for the visa and at the border. Swedish immigration officers check this strictly — a bus or train reservation won't count.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Have a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host ready. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry evidence of sufficient funds — typically around 450 SEK per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a high limit works.Recommended
No visa-on-arrival or e-visa for Sweden
Ugandan passport holders cannot get a visa at the airport or online. You must apply in advance at the Swedish embassy or VFS center in Kampala. Arriving without a visa means immediate refusal and a return flight at your own cost.
Schengen area rules apply
A Swedish visa allows you to travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Your first point of entry must be Sweden, or you must spend the most time there.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather all required documents: passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, travel insurance, bank statements, and the completed visa application form. Make copies of everything.
2
Book an appointment at the Swedish embassy or VFS center in Kampala
Visit the VFS Global website for Sweden in Uganda to schedule a biometric appointment. Slots fill up quickly — book at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
3
Attend the appointment in person
Go to the VFS center in Kampala (or the embassy if required) with all original documents plus photocopies. You'll submit your application, provide fingerprints and a photo, and pay the visa fee.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can extend to 45 days during peak season. Track your application online using the reference number from VFS.
5
Collect your passport
Once processed, you'll be notified to collect your passport from the VFS center. If approved, the visa sticker will be inside. Check the dates and validity immediately.
6
Travel and present documents at the border
At Arlanda or any Swedish airport, present your passport with the visa, return ticket, and proof of accommodation. Border officers may ask about your plans — answer clearly.
