Iceland entry requirements for United States passport holders
Good news: U.S. citizens don't need a visa for Iceland. It's part of the Schengen Area, so the same rules as other Schengen countries apply.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must be valid for the duration of your stay | Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Iceland. The 6-month validity rule does not apply for Schengen entry — just cover your stay. Airlines may still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier before flying. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from Schengen area | Immigration at Keflavik will ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this at check-in too. A flight to London, Reykjavik to New York — any departure works as long as it's within your visa-free limit. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers rarely ask for it, but they can. A simple booking.com printout or Airbnb confirmation works. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself | You don't need to show a bank statement unless asked. If questioned, have a credit card or cash (around 10,000 ISK per day) ready. Most travellers never get asked. | Recommended |

Health & vaccines for Iceland
Cold weather and wind chill can cause hypothermia; dress in layers and carry waterproof gear.
Food safety standards are high; risk is minimal but can occur from undercooked meat or unpasteurized dairy.
Ticks in rural areas can carry TBE; consider vaccination if hiking or camping in wooded regions.
