Sweden entry requirements for United States passport holders
Americans don't need a visa for trips to Sweden up to 90 days. This visa-free access applies to all of Sweden (including Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö) and covers tourism, business meetings, and family visits. As of 2026, the rules remain unchanged: just show up with a valid passport.
Entry requirements
| Requirement | Details | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Valid passport Must be valid for the entire stay | Your US passport must be valid for the entire time you're in Sweden. Sweden doesn't enforce the 6-month rule, but airlines might — check with your carrier before departure. | Required |
| Return or onward ticket Proof of departure from Schengen area | Immigration at Arlanda and other Swedish airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Since Sweden is in Schengen, your 90-day clock runs across all 27 countries — have a flight out before day 90. | Required |
| Proof of accommodation Hotel booking or host invitation | Swedish border officers sometimes ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. I've been asked twice at Arlanda — better to have it. | Recommended |
| Proof of funds Show you can support yourself | Sweden doesn't publish a fixed amount, but carry a credit card and a bank statement showing at least $50–100 per day. I've never been asked, but a friend was pulled aside at Arlanda and had to show his card. | Recommended |
