Visa on arrival
Get a 30-day visa on arrival at any major Indonesian airport or seaport. Pay $35 USD in cash at the visa-on-arrival counter before immigration. You can extend it once for another 30 days at an immigration office in Indonesia.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Indonesia strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, the airline will deny boarding. Carry a photocopy of your passport bio page separately.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-on-arrival entry
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward flight ticket ready. Airlines also check this before issuing your boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have hotel booking details
Immigration may ask for your hotel address or booking confirmation. Have a printed or digital copy of your reservation. If staying with friends, carry their address and phone number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to show sufficient cash or card
Officers rarely ask, but carry at least $500 USD equivalent in cash or a credit card. ATMs are widely available in cities but not at smaller airports.Recommended
Cash only at VOA counter
The Visa on Arrival fee must be paid in cash. ATMs are available after you clear customs, but not before. Bring 500,000 IDR (or equivalent in USD/EUR) in your carry-on.
Extension requires a sponsor
To extend your VOA, you'll need a sponsor letter from your hotel or a local resident. Most hotels can provide this for a small fee. Start the extension process at least 7 days before your first 30 days expire.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the Visa on Arrival counter
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'VOA' before passport control. This is usually a separate counter. Pay the 500,000 IDR fee (cash only). You'll get a receipt and a visa sticker.
2
Proceed to passport control
Hand over your passport, the VOA receipt, and your boarding pass. The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit. Keep the small immigration card they give you — you'll need it when you leave.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. You may be asked to show your customs declaration (if you filled one out online). Then exit into the arrivals hall.
