Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days — do not book flights until approved.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a flight out of Vietnam within your eVisa validity period. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready — budget airlines often check this before issuing a boarding pass.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a bank statement showing at least $1,000 USD or the equivalent in cash. Officers almost never check this for Icelandic passport holders, but it's a formal requirement.Recommended
eVisa is single-entry only
The eVisa allows one entry. If you leave Vietnam (even for a day trip to Cambodia), you'll need a new visa to re-enter.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Vietnam, not from your departure date. Double-check before you apply.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnamese eVisa portal (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the fee online (around $25 USD). Processing takes 3-5 business days. You'll receive a PDF approval letter by email.
2
Print the eVisa approval letter
Print the PDF approval letter you receive. Keep it with your passport. You'll need to present it at immigration on arrival.
3
Arrive at a Vietnamese airport
At the airport, go to the immigration counter. Hand over your passport, the printed eVisa letter, and your boarding pass. The officer will stamp you in. No extra forms needed.
4
Show onward ticket if asked
Immigration may ask to see your return or onward ticket. Have a screenshot ready on your phone. They rarely ask, but it's better to be prepared.
