Portuguese passport holders need a visa to enter Australia in 2026. The most common option for short visits is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), which you can apply for online and is valid for up to 12 months.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA (Australia) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
Apply for an ETA through the official Australian ETA app — the website version is a third-party service that charges extra. The app costs $20 AUD and approval usually comes through in seconds. You must have this before boarding your flight to Australia.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Portuguese passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires during your trip, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return ticket or proof you're leaving Australia within your visa validity. A flight booking to New Zealand or Southeast Asia works — just show you're not staying indefinitely.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if you're arriving without any address, expect extra questions.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or credit card
Carry a recent bank statement or have a credit card with enough limit to cover your stay. Immigration doesn't usually check, but if you look underfunded, they may ask.Recommended
ETA is linked to your passport
Your ETA is electronically linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport after getting the ETA, you'll need to apply for a new ETA with the new passport details.
Beware of unofficial ETA websites
Many third-party sites charge €50–€100 for ETA applications. The official fee is only AUD 20 (about €12). Use the official Australian ETA app or the Department of Home Affairs website to avoid overpaying.
Australia's biosecurity is strict
Declare all food, plant material, wood, animal products, and outdoor gear. Fines for undeclared items can be hundreds of dollars. When in doubt, declare it or leave it behind.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website or use the official ETA app. Fill in your passport details, travel plans, and answer a few health and character questions. Pay the fee (around AUD 20). Most applications are approved within minutes, but allow up to 72 hours.
2
Check in for your flight
At the airport, present your passport at check-in. The airline will verify your ETA electronically. Have your return ticket and accommodation details ready in case they ask.
3
Arrive at an Australian airport
When you land (e.g., Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane), follow signs to 'Passenger Arrivals'. Use the SmartGate kiosk if available — scan your passport, answer a few questions, and get a ticket. Hand that ticket to an officer. No visa stamp is needed.
4
Present your documents at immigration
If you can't use SmartGate, join the queue for a human officer. Hand over your passport. They may ask about your return ticket, accommodation, and purpose of visit. Answer clearly and honestly. Keep your phone handy with your ETA confirmation and booking details.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, go to baggage claim, then customs. Declare any food, plant material, or animal products — Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Once through, you're free to start your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Portuguese citizens need a visa to enter Australia. The easiest option for tourism or business visits up to 3 months is the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601). Apply online before you travel.
Most ETAs are approved within minutes. However, some applications are referred for manual processing and can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least a few days before your flight to be safe.
The official ETA application fee is AUD 20 (about €12). Be careful of third-party websites that charge much higher fees — use the official Australian Department of Home Affairs app or website.
The ETA allows stays of up to 3 months per visit. You cannot extend an ETA. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a different visa (e.g., Visitor Visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires.
Refusals are rare for Portuguese citizens with clean records. If refused, you'll receive a letter explaining why. You can apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) instead, which involves a more detailed application and a fee of around AUD 145.
Yes. If you plan to visit New Zealand as well, you'll need a separate visa or NZeTA. The Australian ETA does not cover New Zealand. Check the requirements for your nationality.
Have your passport (valid 6+ months), ETA approval email (screenshot or printed), return or onward ticket, and first night accommodation booking. Travel insurance documents are also good to have, though not mandatory.
