Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival application
Apply at the airport
You get a 30-day visa on arrival at any major Indonesian airport or seaport. Pay $35 USD in cash at the Visa on Arrival counter before immigration. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready — officers at Ngurah Rai and Soekarno-Hatta check both.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Indonesia strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Airlines at Lisbon and Porto check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Jakarta, Bali, and Surabaya always ask for proof of onward travel within 30 days. Budget airlines like AirAsia and Lion Air also check this at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration officers at Bali often ask for a hotel booking confirmation matching your stay dates. If staying with friends, have their address and phone number written down. A simple Booking.com confirmation works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Officers rarely ask, but having $1,000 USD in cash or a bank statement showing sufficient funds helps if questioned. ATMs are widely available in cities but unreliable in remote areas.Recommended
Cash only for VoA
The Visa on Arrival fee must be paid in cash – no cards, no mobile payments. Have 500,000 IDR per person ready in exact change. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash before that point.
e-VoA saves time
You can apply for an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) online before your trip. It costs the same 500,000 IDR and lets you skip the payment queue at the airport. Apply at molina.imigrasi.go.id at least 48 hours before departure.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the VoA counter
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'VoA Payment'. This is usually before the immigration queues. Pay 500,000 IDR in cash and get a receipt.
2
Queue at immigration
Hand over your passport, VoA receipt, and boarding pass. The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa. Keep the receipt attached – you'll need it when leaving.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, pick up your bags and proceed through customs. You may be asked to show your accommodation booking or onward ticket – have them ready on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend it once for another 30 days. Visit an immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) in Indonesia before your first 30 days expire. The extension costs about 500,000 IDR and takes a few days to process.
Most international airports in Indonesia offer VoA, including Jakarta (CGK), Bali (DPS), Surabaya (SUB), and Medan (KNO). Smaller airports like Lombok (LOP) or Yogyakarta (YIA) also have it. Check with your airline if you're flying into a very remote airport.
No, cash only – Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Some counters accept US dollars or euros, but the exchange rate is poor. Bring 500,000 IDR in cash per person.
If you stay airside and don't pass immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the transit area (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), you'll need a VoA or a pre-arranged visa.
You'll be fined 1,000,000 IDR per day of overstay, paid at the airport before departure. Overstays of more than 60 days can lead to deportation and a ban.
No, the VoA is single-entry. If you leave Indonesia (even to a neighbouring country), you'll need a new VoA when you return.
Yes, you can apply for an e-Visa (e-VoA) online before travel. It costs the same 500,000 IDR and saves time at the airport. Apply at the official Indonesian immigration website (molina.imigrasi.go.id).
