Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full 60 days you plan to stay in Thailand. Airlines at check-in may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date — if yours has less, call the airline ahead to confirm they'll let you board.Required
Return or onward ticket
Strictly enforced at check-in and immigration
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang routinely ask for proof of a flight out of Thailand within 60 days. Budget airlines are especially strict — they may deny boarding without one. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying for the first few nights. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Thailand works. If you're still deciding, book a refundable hotel for the first 2–3 nights.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
Immigration can request proof you have at least 20,000 THB (roughly €520) in cash, a bank statement, or a credit card with a sufficient limit. Carry a mix of cash and a card to be safe.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)TDAC
Optional online pre-registration
Register your passport and flight details at tdac.immigration.go.th before you fly. It's free, takes 2 minutes, and gives you a QR code that speeds up the immigration queue at major airports. Not mandatory, but saves time.Open TDAC formOptional
TDAC saves time
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free and optional, but completing it before you fly can cut your immigration queue time significantly. Do it at tdac.immigration.go.th.
Overstay penalties
Overstaying even one day costs 500 THB per day. Over 90 days can get you banned. Set a reminder to leave before your 60 days are up.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months), book return/onward ticket, and arrange first night accommodation. Complete the TDAC online at tdac.immigration.go.th if you want to skip queues.
2
Arrive at Thai immigration
At Bangkok (BKK or DMK), Phuket, or Chiang Mai airports, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. If you completed TDAC, show the QR code.
3
Present documents to officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for return ticket or accommodation proof. Answer honestly about your stay purpose (tourism, business meetings). They will stamp you in for up to 60 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After stamping, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. No additional forms needed unless you have goods to declare.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Thailand within 60 days. If you need to stay longer, you can apply for a tourist visa (single or multiple entry) at a Thai embassy before travel, or leave and re-enter (visa run) — but border runs are increasingly scrutinized.
Overstay is fined 500 THB per day (about €13), up to a maximum of 20,000 THB. Overstays over 90 days can result in a ban from re-entering Thailand for 1 year. Always exit before your stamp expires.
If you are transiting through a Thai airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you do not need a visa. If you need to enter Thailand (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), the 60-day visa-free entry applies.
Technically, visa-free entry is for tourism and short business visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. The Thai government is considering a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV), but as of now, working remotely is not explicitly allowed. Avoid mentioning work to immigration.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Thai immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. No exceptions.
No, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is optional. However, completing it online before your flight can significantly reduce queue time at immigration. It's free and takes 5 minutes.
No, there is no official proof of funds requirement for Portuguese passport holders entering Thailand visa-free. However, immigration may ask if they suspect you cannot support yourself. Having a credit card or cash (at least 20,000 THB equivalent) is wise.
