Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get a visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and other designated entry points. Pay $50 USD for a single-entry tourist visa (cash only, bring exact change). Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready — the visa officer will ask for both.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Luxembourg passport needs at least one blank page for the visa sticker. Tanzania does not require 6 months of validity beyond your stay — just enough to cover your trip. Airlines may still enforce 6 months, so check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at DAR and JRO routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a bus/train ticket out of Tanzania. Without it, you may be denied the visa on arrival.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers at the visa counter sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked tour. A simple Booking.com confirmation on your phone works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Have at least $200 USD in cash or a credit card showing available balance. Immigration rarely checks this for Luxembourg passport holders, but the law allows them to ask. Keep a bank statement or ATM receipt handy.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash (USD). There are no ATMs or card machines at the visa counter. Bring crisp, undamaged bills — old or torn notes may be refused.
Keep your receipt
After paying the visa fee, you'll get a receipt. Keep it with your passport until you leave Tanzania — you may need it for departure.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
After landing at Julius Nyerere (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's usually a separate counter before passport control.
2
Fill out the arrival form
You'll get a small card on the plane or at the counter. Fill in your details — passport number, flight number, where you're staying.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over your passport, the form, and the fee (cash USD). The officer will process it and give you a receipt. Keep it safe.
4
Get stamped in
Once the visa is issued, you'll get a stamp in your passport. Then proceed to passport control, show your passport, and you're in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, at all international airports: Julius Nyerere (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar. Land borders also offer visa on arrival, but airports are the most straightforward.
For a single-entry tourist visa, it's $50 USD. Double-entry is around $100. Bring exact change in crisp US dollars (no older than 2013) — they may not accept worn or old bills.
Sometimes, but USD is preferred. If you pay in TZS, the exchange rate may be worse. Stick to USD to avoid confusion.
Usually 10-20 minutes, but can be longer during peak hours (multiple flights arriving). The queue moves fairly quickly.
Yes, you can apply for an extension at the Immigration Office in Dar es Salaam or regional offices. It costs around $50 for an extra 30 days. Start the process before your current visa expires.
Not required for Luxembourg passport holders unless you're arriving from a country with yellow fever. But it's recommended to have it anyway — some border officials may ask.
You'll be denied entry. Tanzania strictly enforces the 6-month rule. Renew your passport before traveling.
