Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to cover the full duration of your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight saves you from being questioned at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having it can delay your entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready showing enough funds for your trip. There's no fixed amount, but ¥50,000–¥100,000 (roughly $350–$700) for a short stay is a safe benchmark.Recommended

Visa-free for 90 days
Portuguese passport holders can enter Japan without a visa for tourism, business meetings, or visiting family. The 90-day period starts the day you land. No need to apply in advance.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Renew it before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before flying
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from entry. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (free, saves time).
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and any pre-filled forms ready.
3
Go through immigration
Join the queue for foreign passport holders. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day landing permission.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. Walk through customs — if you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Have your customs declaration form ready (paper or QR code from Visit Japan Web).
5
Exit and start your trip
Once through customs, you're free to leave the airport. Activate your eSIM or insert your local SIM. Use Google Maps or your booking confirmation to navigate to your accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a work or student visa) before you travel.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before you book anything. The 6 months are counted from your date of entry, not your departure.
If you stay airside (don't go through immigration) and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can use the visa-free 72-hour transit program — but you must have a confirmed onward ticket and stay within the same airport city.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined, detained, and potentially deported with a ban on re-entering Japan for several years. Set a reminder to leave a few days before your 90 days are up.
Technically, the visa-free status is for tourism and short business visits only. Working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey area — many travellers do it, but officially it's not allowed. If you're caught, you could be asked to leave. For long-term remote work, consider a designated 'digital nomad' visa if Japan introduces one.
No, it's optional. But it saves time at immigration because you pre-submit your arrival details and get a QR code. Without it, you'll fill out paper forms at the airport. Most travellers find the online version faster and less hassle.
Go to the nearest police station to file a report, then contact the Portuguese embassy or consulate in Tokyo. They can issue an emergency travel document. Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately to speed things up.
